1) What Should I Sell on eBay? ...Discover 3 Simple Techniques You Can Use, to Find Out What People Want to Buy!

What are the best products to sell on eBay?

This is one of the most common questions I'm asked, but unfortunately, there isn't an easy answer to it. Sure, some categories seem to be more popular than others, but you may find that the market is already completely saturated with more sellers than buyers, or you may face tough competition from large sellers importing container loads of goods from overseas, that they can then sell at prices even your local wholesaler could only dream about. There is some good news though...you don't actually need to sell in one of the large categories on eBay, like clothing or electronics, to be able to make a very good full time or part time income. It's all about how well you can locate your own, profitable niche market, that no one else seems to know about.

Not sure where to start? Here are 3 simple techniques you can use to help locate your own niche....with little, or no competition!

    1. eBay's Hot Items Report - Each month, eBay compiles a report, which provides you with information on what categories are growing, or considered to be 'hot' categories. There are 4 levels of 'hotness' - Level 4 being the highest, down to Level 1 being the lowest, but still showing growth. To be included in the report, a category has to have a high amount of successful auctions (over 50%), at least 100 bids a week. Just keep in mind though, that this report has been compiled from eBay America, so even though most of the time, what happens in America, will happen in Australia within a few months (if not sooner), this isn't always the case.

For example: In June, July & August, one of the 'Hot' categories may be Sunglasses, but if you went out & bought a whole heap of sunglasses to sell on eBay Australia as soon as you read the report, they probably wouldn't sell very well. Why? ....because it's winter here (summer in America), & no one is even thinking about buying the latest sunnies.

    2. eBay's Want It Now - Want It Now, is an area on eBay, where people can post ads for items they are looking to buy - & it's Australian requests (not American info). By spending a bit of time having a look through the posts, maybe in a category you have an interest in, you may well be able to find a handful of people looking for the same item. If you do, then that may well indicate a potential niche market, which is worth looking into more. In general, if a few people have actually bothered to place a post, then there are probably quite a few more people, who are looking for the same item, who haven't bothered to place an ad.

    3. Undertake Your Own Market Research - If you haven't been able to find anything that interests you in the 'Hot Items' report or 'Want It Now' section, then try doing your own market research. Start by brainstorming a list of areas/subjects you have a good knowledge of, or interest in - for example, you might like 80's country music, or a certain style of clothing. Once you've done that, have a browse through the eBay categories that are closely related to the topics on your list . Keep an eye out for items that you know people with your interest want or need, that either aren't being sold at all, or there are only very few items which are receiving a lot of bids. By looking in a category that you have a good knowledge of, you are far more likely to be able to spot potentially profitable niche markets.

Ok...so you've decided what you want to sell now, & are sure there is a great niche market for it on eBay. What next?

Before you go & buy 50 widgets from the wholesaler, there's a few more things you MUST look at to make sure your widget will make you money. Run a search on eBay for any auctions of the items you want to sell, then place a 'watch' on any items you find, by clicking on the 'Watch this Item' link at the top right hand side of the listing. This will enable you to see how much the item sells for, by keeping track of it in your 'My eBay' area. Once you have a good sample of sale prices, you can then contact the wholesaler, & find out how much you can purchase the item for at wholesale. If there seems to be a high enough profit margin, then ask the wholesaler if they're happy to provide you with a small, sample order first...just so you can be 200% sure the items will sell well, before you commit to a larger purchase.
